Freedom Writers

"People will not remember you on what you have imparted to them but on how you touched their lives along the way”. This is the best way to describe Miss Gruwell who was being featured by the film Freedom Writers. Her life as a teacher and a wife to his husband could be a great example of an outstanding mentor. It was being portrayed in the film how Miss Gruwell suffered because of her violent students who came from the different family situations. She did not only meet opposition from her students but she  also had a hard time with her department head, who believed that she should focus less on teaching her students to learn and read, and more on teaching them discipline and obedience. But Miss Gruwell never gave up on it but rather pursued her profession and desire to educate her students and touch their lives in one way or another that brought her students to a big change in their lives. Her love to her profession was burning in her heart as she aimed to change her students in a way that her students could have a better future.

The theme of the story was really inspiring especially for an education student like me who also aims to be a good teacher in the future. I was so inspired upon watching the movie. I have realized how teachers sacrificed their own happiness just for their passion in teaching. Sometimes we failed to appreciate them on how they bring us to a better future.

Her husband decided to file a divorce against her because she did not have anymore time to him for she is very busy in school. But Miss Gruwell continued to impart her time to her students besides the pain inside her. She sacrificed almost half of her life just because of her profession and motives to help her students to acquire change among them.

Yes, being a teacher is not really easy. But other professions will not exist without teachers. They act as mentors and parents at the same time. Everyday, they plan on how to handle their classes having different attitudes of their students. They also feel what the students’ feelings. Sometimes, they also feel disappointment especially when the students are just taking their time for granted. But a good teacher has to be patient in her/his profession.

Upon watching the movie, I remembered my high school teacher who really did her best in imparting her knowledge to us. Some of our classmates did not pay respect to her because of her kindness to us. They abused her. But I never ever remember that she got angry to those students. I really appreciated her patient to them. After all, those students realized what they have done.

Like the movie Freedom Writers, teachers really have to be patient enough in handling different behaviors in the class. They have to be teachers, parents and friends to their students. Ideally, teachers do not just teach the subject matters but they also touch the life of the students in many other ways. Furthermore, teachers always have the time to listen to their students’ problem.

In general, the movie teaches us the value of our teachers whose desire is to help us reach the goal in our life. It also gives us an idea as education students that being a teacher is never easy. Never aim to be a teacher if you do not love to live for it because I believe that good teachers do not teach to live to but they rather live to teach.
